Dr Bhuvana Sugumaran is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), with a Certificate of Advanced Training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. She has over a decade of experience in public mental health, working across hospital and community settings to support individuals experiencing mental health conditions.
Bhuvana’s areas of interest include perinatal psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, and a wide range of adult psychiatry. She has expertise in supporting individuals navigating emotional and cognitive difficulties related to pregnancy and the postpartum period, neurodevelopmental diagnoses, psychosis, depression, anxiety, OCD and mental illness in the setting of medical illness (e.g. chronic medical illness, neurological and autoimmune conditions).
Bhuvana is committed to providing thoughtful, compassionate, and evidence-based care. She adopts a person-centred approach that integrates psychodynamic, trauma-informed, and cognitive-behavioural frameworks. Her practice is grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and a deep respect for each person’s lived experience. She places strong emphasis on creating a safe, reflective space where people feel heard, understood, and supported in their recovery.
In her public role, Bhuvana provides psychiatric input to patients in acute psychiatric and medical settings. She also holds an Adjunct Lecturer position at Monash University and is actively involved in teaching and supervising medical students and psychiatry trainees.
